The MARINEPLAN site responds to the phenomenon of the international extension of new maritime policies and planning nitiatives. In the European Union this process starts with the Green Paper (2006) and in Spain with the Law 41/2010 on protection of the marine environment that transposes the Directive on Marine Strategy (2008).
RESEARCH IN MARITIME AFFAIRS FROM SOCIAL SCIENCE
The extension to the marine environment of new public policies and planning initiatives requires a broad base of information, both on the marine environment itself and on the activities and uses that take place in it. The production of databases, and the preparation of informative materials, mainly cartographic documents, is the task that we have been developing in recent years through European, national and regional projects.
MARINEPLAN integrates different results and products of this academic activity, thus providing access to materials that may be useful for public managers and researchers. The cartographic documents occupy a relevant place with the integration of a viewer that allows a dynamic way to access and use the extensive cartography produced.
